Bath, England

[OLD WOMAN] ‘Bath isn’t known for baths’. I remember a commercial for Bega cheese back home that says all these different names of towns in Australia and says how they weren’t named after assorted goods. Contradictory to what I first said, I think Bath is actually named after baths. The Roman Baths in the town centre (cost eleven quid to enter and the line was massive; didn’t seem worth it).

Bath was another destination the Battlers found themselves traveling to, only having heard it several weeks before actually going. Were told not a lot happens but it’s worth going and really nice. Well there were some old buildings and even Eddie was getting sick of them. And his tolerance for that stuff his high.

Stayed in Bath YMCA Hostel, ironically there seemed to be only old people and Asians hanging around. The ‘common room’ served more as a half way house with barbaric similarities to the reception of a doctors surgery or hospital. Eighteen bed dorm as well; triple bunks.

It was a Saturday so there were plenty of people knocking about. Noticed everybody tended to walk slower than the usual pace. Then became aware that the people knocking about were old. All of them were. Further realised that this town was a massive retirement village. What the hell were we doing here. And so the response started every time we saw somebody do something plain or boring, or a shop that sold boring things. For example a shop called ‘Stamp and Coin Collecting’. Everything triggered that single phrase “what else would there be to do?”

Nothing.

Actually there was a rugby game everybody seemed to be going to – Bath vs Exeter. The Battlers followed the flow of the crowd towards the entrance of the stadium but found at the gates it was a sold out crowd. Would have liked to have seen them play.

Walked around a bit and took a photo of an autumn yellow leaf tree. Reckon that was the best part about Bath for me. Sound like a wet blanket and I know each country and town is different but comparing it to other stuff we’ve done the past seventeen weeks, this place does nothing for me.

Day light savings ended the morning we left Bath. Real thankful to the chap who alerted us of the change. Didn’t know they had day light savings in England. It definitely could have caused a lot of dilemmas for us if we were none the wiser. Don’t see the point of day light savings over here as there’s never any sun out to save. Pointless really.

Fingers crossed there is a tad more happening in Bristol
