Conflict of the Northern Beaches

IMG_2680

We are a simple people that doesn’t ask for much but to live in our bubble and have an efficient transportation system (among other things) to make our day more convenient. We are blessed with the helL90 that takes us from the tip of the Palm tree straight to the CBD. But this isn’t enough.

Delivered this morning in your daily dose of local news, was a front page headline that suggested Insular Peninsular resident and NSW Premier, Mike Baird, was to introduce a much quicker way for us to head south into the lion’s den. This idea won’t be officially released until the presentation of the NSW State Budget next Tuesday, however from the sounds of it, a Bus Rapid Transit system from Mona Vale to Wynyard along with a tunnel under Military Road is the most probable.

So how is this idea more of a chance of success from all the other ideas over the past few decades? Well, Mike Baird has sat in the gridlock of steel and rubber, sucking up the carbon monoxide fumes. He feels our pain. He is one of us and he now has more control over what the State Government spends its money on. Put two and two together. It doesn’t equal four. It equals a massive Northern Beaches infrastructure overhaul.

BUT this is where the conflict lies. As I mentioned previously, we are a simple people that do not like to be disturbed by all the rubbish that happens outside our bubble. Easier access to the city means a better connection to OUR beaches (and I refer to the beaches as ours because although we don’t own them, we are more than willing to fight for them).  And why would we want our beaches, the Mother of all mothers, to be inundated with all the crap that happens in other parts of the city? We don’t.

We are stabbing ourselves with a double-edged sword. We want to be closer to the city without the city being closer to us. We aren’t in a pickle, we’re in a jar of them and the time to make a decision is past its deadline. It seems as though we are going to get what we think we want without properly considering the consequences of what we don’t want. Perhaps being so far away isn’t as bad as we thought.

Keep into consideration that I do not have to travel to the city every day for work. I actually try and avoid heading any further south than the Spit Bridge than I have to. I hate how long it takes to get to the city but if I don’t like it perhaps I should just move closer. Eat your veggies before your meat so you can enjoy the good stuff for longer.

It’s just one man’s thoughts, but I think I speak on behalf of the many who live in God’s Country.

  1. Couldn’t agree more. I like our bubble. I am against any mass transit system, bus, train, whatever. here’s a thought…regionalise. Setup centres for new population in cities beyond the state capitals. Stop any further expansion on the northern or any side of sydney. If you look at the USA they have city after city sometimes only 100 miles apart.a whole new centre with everything you need. Leave the northern beaches alone, please.
