What an absolutely treat this place is. A resort. With palm trees, a big pool and tall palm trees, Atami Escape Resort is perched upon a cliff combatting the swell of the Pacific Ocean. A short walk down some stairs, opens up opportunity to walk across the black volcanic sand and into the Pacific Ocean.

Having all but produced gills, the Codger didn’t realise how much he needed a salty rinse in the ocean. It was strange to think that usually the salty rinse is on the other side of this body of water.

The coast north of La Libertad is known as ‘Surf City’ here in El Salvador. They have many WSL tournaments here with just as many currently and ex progressional surfers. Or those who got close. So it was without saying, a surf included into the itinerary was necessary. A 6’6” foamy was all that was available and that was plenty for the Collaroy point like rolling waves. No photos of this one but some nice tan lines.

Quite possibly the best has been saved until last. At sunrise and a short drive a few beaches south, there were 75 sea turtles that had just hatched. Releasing these hour-old turtles into the ocean is an experience worth remembering. What an incredible moment. Watching these helpless, soft bodied turtles begin their life. Most wouldn’t make it to a ripe old age but through the conversation project in La Libertad, the releasing of turtles in such a way allows the eggs to be protected from poachers who do not have the same wish of freedom for these majestic animals.

On to Nicaragua next !
