Last night we had a very multicultural dinner that Albea cooked for us. She cooked a fish and potato soup type thing that tasted pretty good. There were French people and English people also staying the night. Albea is Spanish, there was a French couple and three blokes from England. Nobody spoke each others language except of course us and the English blokes. It made for a very interesting and at most quiet dinner. Since that dinner, Eddie has been freaking out as he has crayfish and nut allergies and we did not know what was in the dinner. We tried to ask Albea but she told Eddie that his allergies are all in his head so apparently when his throat closes up due to an allergic reaction, it’s not happening, it’s just a psychological thing.. Crazy spanish women. All is good now though. Both of us had stress levels peaking today though as to what might happen.
We woke up this morning and Albea had cooked us chorizo omelette on a baguette again which was phenomenal and then proceeded to make us bread with what looked like anchovies on it. We managed to get out of eating it showing actions that we were too full. So lucky.
We walked to the bus station and got the 12pm Alsa bus to Madrid which took us six hours. We have become gods at sleeping during transit now in an upright position. Driving from the north coast to the almost dead middle of spain meant there was more exciting things to look at at a cardboard box making factory. We stopped at what seemed like an abandoned town called Lerma. Would absolutely hate to live or even stay there longer than we did for a pitstop. It was at this stop that we got out the rolls we bought and the vegemite i had brought from home and we had our first taste of home since we have been over here and it tasted almighty. There was this one inconsiderate imbecile sitting in front of us who thought that the six hour bus trip was a perfect time to test out which monotone ringtone he was going to have in his phone. It frustrated Eddie much more than me as I slept for a fair bit but it was still painful.
We got to the bus depot in Madrid and attempted to walk to our hostel we booked called Sol Hostel. We got about twenty meters from the station (also a metro station) and asked a pharmacy how to get there as we were unable to find a map anywhere and had no Internet for google maps. The two ladies helping us told us we should just get the metro train. After taking a while to figure out what lines we needed to take and after I lost a coin by putting it in the credit card slot, as well as accidentally getting on the wrong train before we realised after a few stops, we finally got onto the right train and then onto another train. We got off the train and the right station and asked around until we found our hostel.
We got a room to ourselves for dirt cheap but like I’ve been saying, you get what you pay for so who knows what tonight’s sleep with entail.
We also walked to the nearby supermarket and bought sooo much pasta, mince and sauce as well as two 5L bottles of water. We cooked up a meal and smashed it down, was fantastic. Feel like I’m about to have a food baby.
I’ll tell you what, we get spoilt at home with living having proper kitchen utensils and not having to share everything with people who have very different living conditions. Something to get used to and we’ll have to but just an observation as this is the first actually hostel we’ve stayed in. Slowly making our way down to the ‘scum’ of hostel living; the cheap of the cheap. Wonder how far down we get before one of us cracks. I’m putting my money on myself to crack first.
Because we get a room to ourselves and this place is cheap and we have access to a kitchen I think we are going to stay here at least another night.
Also we saw a white pigeon today so hopefully that brings us some sort of goodluck.
